“The musical score in RO2 is so masterfully composed that it alters how an FPS can play out. Sweeping arrangements that are meant to alter moods and morale – the whole thing sounds complete. More than anything, once I first started I had an urge to rewatch a bunch of classic war films from the 1970s. Depending on which side you’re playing on, you get a differently charged sentimental atmosphere from the ominous score the game chooses. If you’re not into classical music in your World War II themes however, I can’t help you.” —MMOMFG

“It also needs to be said that Red Orchestra 2 has a surprisingly beautiful soundtrack and the orchestral music really helps to amplify the action in both the single player and the multiplayer. Even spectating players in multiplayer is just as exciting when it’s accompanied by the well crafted music found in Red Orchestra 2.” —Game Rant

“Sam Hulick, co-composer of Mass Effect 1 & 2, did an excellent job once again. Exciting & seamless, his passages, filled with dramatic & sublime Russian violins, are a non-stop ticket to early-1940s Stalingrad…it’s a must-listen.” —MeriStation

Did you watch the Emmys last night?

I did not, was busy in the studio! I heard Peter Dinklage won for his role in Game of Thrones, though, and that made me happy.

“The musical score itself is also impressive, composed entirely by Sam Hulick, one of the composers behind Mass Effect. The result is a fantastic soundtrack, varying from atmospheric haunting tones to impressive classical pieces. Hulick’s inspiration from composers such as Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff is clearly audible in the melodies throughout the game, serving to add to the depth and overall feel of the various settings.” —GAMElitist

Back home in Chicago. What a blast the party was! A big thanks to Tripwire for flying both me and my girlfriend out there to celebrate the release of Red Orchestra 2! Good people, good food, and the drinks.. let’s just say I’m still feeling a little foggy-headed. ;) Whew.

A Favorite Game of Mine

Funny name for a game, but trust me when I say Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a turn-based dungeon-crawling RPG with a ton of depth and complexity to it. Lots of races and backgrounds to choose from, a huge list of skills and cool spells (such as extracting potions from corpses and then using an evaporate spell to throw the potion at enemies, exploding on contact?!). Plus, the game gets hard. Eventually you must strategize and plan your moves carefully, because once you die, you’re dead. No re-loading a saved game in this one: once you die, all your saves are wiped.

It’s obviously extremely low tech on the graphics side of things, but don’t let that deter you from checking out this addictive game. It’s got a tutorial mode, so once you get a handle on the key commands, you’ll be able to focus solely on the experience.

Best of all, it’s free. :) If you try it, let me know on Twitter what you think of it. Be sure to grab the “tiles” version for graphics, or you can simply play online without downloading anything.

Do you actually play vidya games?

When I have time! Lately I’m kinda into gaming on my iPhone. Sometimes I’ll block off a weekend and lock myself in my studio and sit down with a game, playing pretty much non-stop. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was the last game I did that with. Next up is either the new Deus Ex game or LA Noire.

I'm on Tumblr!

A little too often I’ve found myself trying to tweet things that Twitter just doesn’t have room for. And I don’t really have time to hassle with a full blown WordPress blog, so I’ve set up a Tumblr account. Brief and to the point! Plus, there’s a handy Q&A link on the left where you can ask more official questions if you’d like (I think I’m going to phase out FormSpring).

That is all, for now.
